JI Launches Nationwide Protest Against Petroleum Levy Starting Friday
The Jamaat-i-Islami Pakistan has announced the third phase of its nationwide protest movement against the petroleum levy, set to begin on Friday with sit-ins planned in all districts of the country. The decision was communicated in a press release issued by the party on Wednesday in Lahore.
The federal government currently imposes a petroleum levy of Rs114 per litre on petrol and Rs100 per litre on diesel. JI emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman says the party’s demand for the complete abolition of the levy is non-negotiable. Back in September, the government and JI had agreed to form committees to recommend measures to reduce the levy and give relief to the public, but the party says no real progress has been made since.
The movement reflects growing public anger over rising fuel prices, which are feeding directly into the cost of living and economic pressure on ordinary citizens. In a related development, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal and the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs, Rana Sanaullah, have reached out to JI Vice Emir Liaqat Baloch to discuss the possibility of a meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. That dialogue could open the door to negotiations on the levy and other pressing economic issues.
