Jordan Church Attack: Three Suspects Arrested After Funeral Shooting Killed Nine

Jordanian security forces arrested three suspects on Monday in connection with the deadly attack on a church in the southern governorate of Karak, state television reported. Reuters reported that nine people were killed and 40 wounded when gunmen opened fire during a funeral at a Greek Orthodox church on Friday in the village of Hamoud, about 120 kilometres southwest of the capital Amman, with witnesses saying the shooting lasted several minutes.
Jordan's Public Security Directorate said security forces found the three suspects early on Monday hiding in an abandoned house in Karak. The suspects refused to surrender and opened fire on the security forces, who returned fire and arrested all three after they were wounded. No security personnel were injured, and a number of firearms and ammunition were found in the suspects' possession after the arrest.
The directorate said the suspects had met their 'just fate' and that 'terrorism has no place among us', but it did not identify their affiliation or say whether they belonged to any militant group. Authorities have described the attackers as 'extremist terrorists', while stressing it is too early to determine links to known groups inside or outside Jordan, and no claim of responsibility has been made. King Abdullah has ordered security forces to respond with an 'iron fist' to the rare attack on Jordan's Christian minority, and Interior Minister Mazen al-Faraya said on Monday that authorities were reviewing how young people were drawn towards extremism.
