Josh Inglis Century Powers Australia to 100-Run Lead in Cape Town Test Decider

Josh Inglis scored a brilliant century on his return to Test cricket as Australia took a 100-run first-innings lead over South Africa on day three of the deciding third Test at Newlands, Cape Town, on Thursday. Inglis made 102 off 132 balls, reaching his hundred with a reverse sweep off spinner Simon Harmer before being caught behind off the same bowler three balls later. Australia, who resumed on 330 for four, were eventually bowled out for 429 in reply to South Africa's 329.

The innings was historic. Inglis became the first Australian batter to score more than one century in all three international formats, adding his second Test hundred to two ODI centuries and two T20I hundreds. The wicketkeeper-batter walked in with Australia at 184 for three after Cameron Green departed for 65, and built a superb 185-run fifth-wicket partnership with Alex Carey, who made 80. Their stand turned a difficult position into a commanding one in a series level at 1-1.

The century was all the sweeter for coming after a long layoff. Inglis had not played a Test since the 2025 Ashes, nearly a year ago, and a fractured finger picked up in the ODI series against South Africa kept him out of the first two Tests of this series. Mitchell Starc's six for 72 had earlier bowled South Africa out for 329 on day one, while Harmer finished as the pick of the home bowlers with four wickets.
