Karachi Port Receives 51,000 Tonnes of Wheat as Imports Rise to Steady Supplies

Karachi Port has received a shipment of 51,000 metric tonnes of wheat, as Pakistan steps up imports to keep grain supplies steady and bring flour prices down. The Karachi Port Trust said the geared vessel MV Gokova M arrived at 12:25pm on Wednesday, October 28, and was assigned Berths 16 and 17, with cargo handling underway at Karachi Gateway Terminal Multipurpose Limited.
Another vessel, MV Great Rainbow, carrying 59,132.19 metric tonnes of wheat, is expected to arrive on November 3. Together, the two shipments will bring more than 110,000 metric tonnes of wheat into the country, and port officials said the operation showed the terminal's capacity to handle large bulk cargoes and keep essential imports flowing.
The arrivals come as Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar chaired a meeting of the Steering Committee on Wheat to review national grain stocks and planned imports. Officials said ensuring sufficient wheat reserves and preventing disruptions were key priorities, with stronger coordination between federal and provincial authorities to keep essential food items available at affordable prices. Dar also directed authorities to monitor market trends closely and take steps to bring flour prices down.
