Karachi Reports Polio Case as Pakistan's 2026 Tally Hits Seven

A new polio case has been reported in Karachi's East district, pushing Pakistan's 2026 nationwide tally to seven, the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) confirmed on Monday. It is the first polio case reported in the port city since December 2024, and a worrying sign for a country fighting to stamp out the crippling disease.

According to the NEOC, five of this year's cases have come from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and two from Sindh. Officials stressed that polio is incurable and that vaccination is the only way to prevent it, urging parents to make sure their children receive polio drops during every campaign and complete their routine immunisation on time. Pakistan remains one of only two countries in the world where wild poliovirus is still transmitted, alongside Afghanistan. Last year the country recorded 31 cases, with 20 of them in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The next nationwide anti-polio campaign will run from November 2 to 8, covering 97 districts, during which more than 23.9 million children will be given polio drops. Health officials called eradication a collective responsibility and appealed to parents, communities, religious leaders, and the media to play their part in defeating misinformation and ensuring every child is protected.
