Karachi Toddler Dies of Mpox as Sindh Death Toll Reaches 12

A toddler from Karachi's Malir area has died of mpox while receiving treatment at the Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital near NIPA, taking Sindh's reported death toll from the virus to 12 this year, ARY News and other local outlets reported on Saturday, October 24.
The child was moved to the government infectious diseases facility from a private hospital a few days earlier after his condition deteriorated, and died during treatment, a hospital spokesperson said. Sindh has recorded 98 mpox cases so far in 2026, and health officials said seven new cases were reported across the province over the past week, most of them in Karachi.
The case has put hospital infection control under fresh scrutiny. The Sindh Healthcare Commission has sealed a private hospital in Malir after a district health report found the child contracted the infection there, with officials saying contaminated instruments were used during a circumcision procedure. The commission said its inspection found the facility operating illegally, with unqualified staff and inadequate infection prevention measures. Health authorities said they are tracing close contacts and have directed public and private hospitals to follow strict infection-prevention measures and use protective equipment when examining suspected cases. Experts have advised the public to maintain good hygiene, avoid direct contact with the lesions or sores of suspected patients, and not share personal items such as towels, clothes and bedding.
