Kenya Releases First 20 Ebola Contacts After 21 Days as 98 Remain in Quarantine

Kenya has released its first 20 contacts linked to the country's imported Ebola case after they completed 21 days of monitoring without developing any symptoms, health officials said on Monday. The group returned home to their families in good health, in what the health ministry called a milestone in containing the outbreak to a single cluster.

Kenya has reported nine confirmed cases of Bundibugyo virus disease so far, including two deaths. The seven surviving patients are stable and receiving treatment, while 98 other contacts remain in quarantine. Those contacts will be released in four waves beginning on November 3, depending on their individual health assessments.

The outbreak began with an imported case confirmed on October 6, after the patient travelled from the Democratic Republic of Congo through Uganda to Nairobi. The World Health Organization said in its October 23 update that the eight cases after the first were linked to that patient, with no evidence of wider community transmission. Health director-general Patrick Amoth urged Kenyans to welcome the released contacts home without stigma, while warning that vigilance cannot drop yet.
