Kimi K3.1 Pro: Moonshot's New AI Nearly Matches Claude Opus 5.5 — Open Weights Coming November 4

Kimi K3.1 Pro: Moonshot

Chinese AI lab Moonshot AI has launched Kimi K3.1 Pro, a new open-weight model that comes remarkably close to the world's best closed AI systems — and it has promised to release the full model weights by November 4, 2026.

K3.1 Pro is a post-trained version of Kimi K3, built with far more reinforcement learning across hundreds of tasks. It is a mixture-of-experts model with 2.8 trillion total parameters — 104 billion active at any one time — and a 1-million-token context window that handles both text and images. It is live now in the Kimi app, Kimi Work, Kimi Code and the Kimi API, alongside a Highspeed variant that runs two to three times faster.

On Terminal-Bench 4.0, one of the toughest coding-agent tests, Moonshot reports a score of 65.7 per cent — ahead of OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra at 58.2 per cent and just behind Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 at 66.4 per cent. Independent benchmarker Artificial Analysis ranks it fourth overall on its Intelligence Index with 55 points, behind only three closed models. The API is also cheaper than its predecessor: $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, a 33 per cent cut from K3. Moonshot says it deliberately removed cyberattack training data from the model so the open release will not push forward offensive hacking ability. If the November 4 weights release goes ahead as promised, K3.1 Pro would become the strongest open-weight model in the world.
