Liverpool vs Chelsea 1-1: Liverpool Win 6-5 on Penalties as Man City Also Survive Shootout

It was a night of penalties in the Carabao Cup fourth round, with both Liverpool and Manchester City reaching the quarter-finals only after dramatic shootouts on Wednesday, October 28. At Anfield, Liverpool beat Chelsea 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, while holders Manchester City edged Brighton 4-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium.

At Anfield, both goals came from the penalty spot in the first half. Morgan Rogers put Chelsea ahead in the 40th minute, but Cody Gakpo levelled for Liverpool just three minutes later. Neither side could find a winner in the second half, and Liverpool held their nerve in the shootout, with Joe Gomez scoring the decisive kick after goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili made a huge save from Emanuel Emegha.

Manchester City twice came from behind against Brighton. Malick Yalcouye put the visitors ahead after 30 minutes, Mateo Kovacic equalised in the 40th, and Georginio Rutter restored Brighton's lead in the 47th. Vitor Reis levelled in the 72nd minute when a Rayan Cherki free-kick deflected off him, and City goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli then saved penalties from Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk. The quarter-final draw pairs Manchester City with Bradford City and Liverpool with Bournemouth, with ties in the week starting December 14.
