Liverpool vs Chelsea Tonight: Carabao Cup Quarter-Final Place on the Line at Anfield

Liverpool host Chelsea at Anfield on Wednesday night in the standout tie of the Carabao Cup fourth round, with a place in the quarter-finals on the line. Kick-off is at 8pm UK time, live on ITV and Sky Sports, and both sides are expected to rotate heavily ahead of big weekend league fixtures. Liverpool beat Tottenham 3-1 in the last round, while Chelsea reached this stage by beating Luton 2-0 and Leeds 6-3.
The dugouts add extra spice. Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso returns to his old club, where he previously worked with Liverpool's Florian Wirtz at Bayer Leverkusen, and has said he will celebrate if Chelsea score against his former side. Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson also returns with Chelsea. Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola and Alonso are close friends, but only one leaves Anfield with a quarter-final ticket.
Team news could decide the tie. Chelsea are without the suspended Cole Palmer, sent off for the first time in his career in Saturday's 2-0 home defeat to Tottenham, while top scorer Joao Pedro is a major doubt with a knee injury and captain Reece James and goalkeeper Emi Martinez are out. Liverpool have their own worries, with Wirtz a doubt after twisting his ankle in Sunday's 2-0 win over Brighton and Dominik Szoboszlai and Jeremie Frimpong out with hamstring injuries. Liverpool sit fourth in the Premier League on 15 points, two ahead of fifth-placed Chelsea, who have not won at Anfield since March 2021.
