Macron Slams Trump's 'Stupid' Comments on France Riots

French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday called foreign leaders' comments about France's riots “unacceptable and stupid” — and confirmed US President Donald Trump was among those he meant. Speaking to reporters in Doha during a Gulf tour, Macron said leaders “on the other side of the Atlantic” were exploiting France's tense social climate for their own political campaigns.
Trump had claimed France was “under siege, looted and set ablaze by migrants, jihadists and communists,” and urged Macron to “close your borders and take control before it is too late.” Macron rejected the claims as “completely false.” He said there was no visible foreign interference in the unrest itself — but there had been “foreign manipulation of information,” including AI-generated images depicting scenes that never actually happened in France.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said his office could brief the countries concerned to stop them spreading baseless claims on social media. The protests, which began in September over education funding and the soaring cost of living, turned violent in Paris and other cities last weekend with rioting and looting. Trump, campaigning ahead of the US midterm elections, has used the violence to rally his supporters on immigration.
