Man City Face Historic Relegation Threat as Punishment for 114 Financial Breaches Looms

Manchester City could be hit with one of the most severe punishments in football history over their financial rule breaches, according to new reports. An independent commission found the club guilty of 114 of the 115 charges brought against it for alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules between 2009 and 2018, a period in which the panel ruled City artificially inflated revenue through sham sponsorship deals worth more than £900 million.

According to the Daily Mail, the Premier League is weighing a huge points deduction that would almost certainly relegate the champions to the Championship — with the possibility of a second deduction to keep them in the second tier for an extra season. A heavy fine is also on the table. City have consistently denied wrongdoing and formally appealed the commission's ruling on October 1, maintaining it contains serious errors.

No official sanction has been announced, and a final decision is not expected before early 2027. On the pitch, Enzo Maresca's side have shut out the noise: seven wins from seven have them top of the Premier League, three points clear of champions Arsenal, ahead of Tuesday's Champions League clash with AEK Athens.
