Martinez Undergoes Successful Jaw Surgery After Horror Everton Collision

Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has undergone successful surgery on a fractured jaw after a terrifying collision during his side's 2-0 Premier League win over Everton on Saturday. The 34-year-old Argentine was stretchered off at the Hill Dickinson Stadium in the 67th minute after clashing with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite while challenging for a Kieran Dewsbury-Hall free kick. Play was halted for more than ten minutes as medics treated him on the pitch before he was carried to a waiting ambulance.

Chelsea confirmed on Sunday that Martinez had surgery for the fractured jaw after hospital tests, and reassured fans there was no serious brain damage. Manager Xabi Alonso said the goalkeeper left the stadium conscious and was taken for precautionary tests. Martinez later told supporters on Instagram that the operation went well, writing: "The most important thing is that we won and with a clean sheet. We'll be back in a few weeks."

The incident overshadowed an important win for Chelsea, with Pedro Neto scoring both goals and dedicating the victory to his injured teammate. It was Chelsea's first Premier League clean sheet since January. Twenty-one-year-old Mike Penders replaced Martinez to make his Premier League debut, and the Argentine is now expected to miss around six to seven weeks of action as he recovers.
