Mazda CX-5 Now Comes With Google Gemini AI Assistant Built In

Mazda CX-5 Google Gemini AI Assistant

Mazda has rolled out Google's Gemini artificial intelligence assistant to its new CX-5, letting drivers control the car and find information just by speaking naturally. Announced on Tuesday, October 27, the update is free and arrives over the air for CX-5 models with Google built in, sold in the United States, Canada, Europe and Japan. Once enabled after signing into a Google account, Gemini replaces the existing Google Assistant in the car.

Mazda says the technology understands natural language, context and follow-up questions, so drivers no longer need to remember exact voice commands. A driver can ask for a well-rated restaurant with outdoor seating along their route, narrow the choices with extra questions, play music to suit their mood through Spotify or Amazon Music, or have messages from apps like WhatsApp summarised and read aloud. The system supports 12 European languages and can also draft, refine or translate replies by voice.

Mazda joins Volvo, Ford and Renault in offering Google's AI assistant in its cars, although the CX-5 is the only Mazda model with a Google-based infotainment system for now. The move could be good news for CX-5 owners, since reviewers found the car's large central touchscreen distracting and slow to respond — and talking to Gemini means touching it far less.
