Meta's Muse AI App Hits 10.2 Million US Downloads in 40 Days, Outpacing ChatGPT's Early Pace

Meta's new AI companion app Muse has become just the 12th mobile app ever to reach 10 million US downloads within 40 days of launch, according to fresh Sensor Tower data reported by TechCrunch. The app, which launched on September 8, has logged 10.9 million downloads worldwide — 10.2 million of them in the United States.
The milestone puts Muse in an exclusive club dominated by mobile games like Fortnite, PUBG Mobile, and Pokémon GO. The only other non-game apps to reach the mark this fast were Disney+ and Meta's own Threads, back in July 2023. Muse's early pace also beats its AI rivals: ChatGPT managed 3.7 million US downloads in its first 40 days, while Grok and Claude reached 500,000 and 200,000 respectively.
Retention looks strong too. Muse kept 30% of US users active after seven days and 23% after 14 days, well ahead of the 19% and 16% averages of its competitors, and hit 2.5 million daily active users for the first time on October 16. The growth comes with heavy spending — Meta devoted 39% of its total US advertising budget to Muse in October. The ride hasn't been entirely smooth: Meta recently suspended the app's conversation-sharing feature after researchers found shared chats could leak personal information.
