Mexico Charges Ex-Prosecutor With Treason Over Secret US Drug Raid

Mexico has revived one of its rarest and gravest criminal charges — treason — against a former state prosecutor accused of letting American agents take part in a drug raid without the federal government's approval.
César Jáuregui Moreno, who served as attorney general of the northern border state of Chihuahua from 2023 until this year, was charged by federal prosecutors on Wednesday. Prosecutors allege he allowed US personnel to join an April operation against a suspected drug lab in the remote, mountainous region of Chihuahua.
The raid only came to light after two of the American agents, reported to have worked for the CIA, were killed in a car crash on April 19 while returning from the operation. Two officers from the Chihuahua State Investigation Agency died alongside them when their convoy veered off a road and plunged into a ravine.
A judge has ordered Jáuregui held in pretrial detention while the court decides whether there is enough evidence to proceed. A follow-up hearing is scheduled for Saturday. He has denied the allegations, saying he never instructed or consented to US involvement.
Attorney General Ernestina Godoy Ramos said Jáuregui allowed foreign agents to carry out activities reserved for Mexican authorities and failed to share information with federal officials. The former prosecutor is a member of the conservative opposition PAN party.
The case comes as President Claudia Sheinbaum faces pressure from US President Donald Trump to crack down on drug trafficking, while insisting foreign officials can only operate in Mexico with federal clearance.
