Microsoft Beats Earnings Forecasts as Revenue Hits $92.28 Billion

Microsoft has beaten Wall Street expectations in its first quarter of fiscal 2027, reporting revenue of $92.28 billion against a forecast of $90.62 billion. Earnings per share came in at $4.89, ahead of the $4.72 consensus estimate, and the company's shares rose about 2.5% in extended trading after the results were released on Wednesday, October 28.

Cloud computing did most of the heavy lifting. Microsoft's cloud revenue rose 30%, while Azure, its cloud platform, grew 48%, beating the company's own guidance of around 45%. Businesses are rushing to buy cloud capacity to run AI tools, and Microsoft, which sells the Windows operating system, Office software and Teams alongside Azure, is one of the main beneficiaries of that spending wave.

The result stands in sharp contrast to Google parent Alphabet, which reported on the same evening and saw its shares fall after missing forecasts. Microsoft's beat will reassure investors who worried that huge AI infrastructure spending would squeeze profits, though the company is still spending tens of billions of dollars a quarter expanding its data centres. Attention now turns to Amazon, which reports on Thursday.
