Microsoft has reaffirmed its £22 billion UK investment commitment despite pulling out of a deal for the country's largest AI data centre, the tech giant's UK boss said on Wednesday.

"We are still fully committed to that investment package," the Microsoft UK chief stressed, adding that the firm also remains "committed" to its relationship with the data centre operator, with plans to work together on sites outside the UK. He said he has held positive discussions with Prime Minister Andy Burnham about AI opportunities since taking the role this summer, pointing to Manchester as an area where AI adoption is rapidly growing and supporting economic growth.

Microsoft also released data showing that generative AI adoption in the UK has accelerated over the past year. Around 43.7 percent of Britons used the technology in the second quarter of 2026, compared with 36.6 percent a year earlier. That puts the UK eighth in the world and second in the G7 group of countries for the pace of generative AI adoption - though still well behind top performers the United Arab Emirates and Singapore, at 73.3 and 64.3 percent respectively.

The announcement comes as tech giants race to build AI infrastructure across Europe, with the UK positioning itself as a leading destination for AI investment.
