More Than 100 Killed in Sudan Market Drone Strike in Nyala, Rights Group Says

More than 100 people were killed and 113 injured when a drone strike hit a crowded market in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur in Sudan, according to the Sudanese rights group Emergency Lawyers. The group said the strike took place on the evening of Monday, 26 October, in an area controlled by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, and that many of those killed and wounded were women and children.

Emergency Lawyers blamed the Sudanese Armed Forces for the attack and called for an independent investigation, describing the market as a civilian site where people had gathered to eat and do business. Doctors Without Borders reported a different, lower toll from the hospital it supports in Nyala, saying its teams received 36 bodies and treated more than 150 wounded people, many with shrapnel injuries and severe burns — a reminder that the full casualty count is still being verified.

The strike is part of Sudan's wider war, which began in April 2023 between the army and the Rapid Support Forces and has since spread deep into Darfur. The United Nations describes it as the world's largest humanitarian crisis, with around 34 million people — roughly two-thirds of Sudan's population — in need of humanitarian assistance. For the shoppers and vendors caught in the Nyala market, the attack is the latest sign that civilians, not front lines, are bearing the heaviest cost of the fighting.
