Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu departed Pakistan early Friday morning, wrapping up a historic three-day state visit — the first by a Maldivian head of state in 11 years. The visit, held at the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, coincided with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The headline outcome: 20 memorandums of understanding spanning defence, maritime security, IT, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, health, education, agriculture, fisheries, tourism, air connectivity and the environment. Both leaders set an ambitious goal — lifting annual bilateral trade from just $13.9 million to $200 million within two years.
Muizzu received a guard of honour at PM House, held talks with President Asif Ali Zardari, PM Shehbaz, Deputy PM Ishaq Dar and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir, and was awarded an honorary doctorate by the International Islamic University Islamabad. A Pakistan-Maldives business forum also brought the two countries' business communities together. Direct flights between the two countries and a revival of SAARC were also on the table.
