Naomi Osaka Knocks Out Jasmine Paolini in Tokyo First Round

Naomi Osaka ended Jasmine Paolini's run at the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo on Tuesday, beating the Italian 6-3, 7-6 (4) in the first round of the WTA 500 hard-court tournament. Osaka, ranked world No. 18 and seeded seventh, was too strong for Paolini, ranked No. 35, in a straight-sets win at the Ariake Coliseum.

The tournament, which has been held since 1973, runs from October 26 to November 1, and Osaka's victory sends her through to the second round while Paolini heads home early. The Japanese star, a four-time Grand Slam champion, looked sharp in the key moments, closing out a tight second-set tiebreak to seal the match without dropping a set.

For Paolini, the defeat is an early blow in Tokyo after a season in which she has fought to stay among the world's top players. Osaka, meanwhile, will be hoping a strong week on home soil can build momentum for the end of the season, with the Tokyo crowd firmly behind her as she chases another title in front of her home fans.
