NBA Injury Blow: Cooper Flagg Out Indefinitely as Banchero Faces 4-6 Weeks Out

The NBA season is barely a week old and already losing its young stars. Dallas Mavericks forward Cooper Flagg is out indefinitely with a mild left shoulder sprain after a hard foul on a breakaway dunk in Friday's 121-105 win at Indiana. Pacers forward Aaron Nesmith was called for a flagrant foul after hitting Flagg from behind, and although Flagg made both free throws, he did not return. An MRI on Saturday confirmed the sprain; Dallas says he will be re-evaluated next week.

Orlando suffered a similar blow on the same night. Magic star Paolo Banchero sustained a low-grade right high ankle sprain in Friday's 115-93 loss to Minnesota, an injury ESPN reports typically carries a four-to-six-week timetable. Banchero, who finished that game with 14 points, six rebounds and five assists, said Desmond Bane fell into his ankle in the first quarter and that he felt it again in the third before asking to come out.

The timing could hardly be worse for either team. Flagg, the 2025 No. 1 pick and reigning Rookie of the Year, scored 32 points in Dallas's season opener and had 14 points, six assists and five rebounds in just 17 minutes at Indiana before getting hurt. Without him, and with Kyrie Irving resting on the second night of a back-to-back, Dallas lost its home opener 122-106 to San Antonio. Both clubs now face a long stretch without the player their offence is built around.
