NBA Tip-Off Smashes Ratings Records: 7.71 Million Watch 76ers-Knicks on NBC and Peacock

NBA Tip-Off Smashes Ratings Records

The NBA's opening night on NBC and Peacock made television history. The league announced that Tuesday's primetime doubleheader averaged 6.4 million viewers, making it the most-watched NBA Tip-Off doubleheader ever, up 14 percent from last year and smashing the previous record of 5.7 million set in 2010.

The night's main event, the Philadelphia 76ers' 106-100 win over the New York Knicks, averaged 7.71 million viewers — the most-watched primetime opening-night game in league history, peaking at 9.1 million at 9:45 p.m. ET. The game spoiled the Knicks' championship banner-raising night at Madison Square Garden and marked LeBron James's debut in a 76ers uniform alongside Tyrese Maxey.

The nightcap, Oklahoma City's 116-104 win over San Antonio in a rematch of last season's Western Conference finals, drew 4.8 million viewers, the second-biggest late primetime Tip-Off audience ever. Even the afternoon game, Detroit's 121-113 comeback over Boston, set a record with 2.5 million viewers. In all, the first-ever NBA Tip-Off tripleheader on one network averaged 5.1 million viewers.
