India chased down a massive 226-run target to beat New Zealand in the first T20I at Hagley Oval, Christchurch on Thursday, completing the highest successful run chase in India's T20I history. The previous Indian record was 209, achieved twice. Sanju Samson top-scored with a blazing 67 off 33 balls, including eight fours and four sixes, to power the chase.
New Zealand had earlier posted 225 for 4, their highest-ever T20I total on home soil, powered by Glenn Phillips' unbeaten 82 off 40 balls. Finn Allen chipped in with 45 off 24 and Bevon Jacobs with 31 off 16, while India's bowlers struggled on a batting-friendly surface — Axar Patel conceded 51 runs and returning pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar went for 49 in his four overs.
