The Washington Wizards will begin their 2026-27 NBA season without their most anticipated player. AJ Dybantsa, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, has been ruled out of Wednesday's season opener against the Milwaukee Bucks because of a left ankle sprain, ending days of speculation about whether the 19-year-old would be ready for opening night.

Wizards head coach Brian Keefe confirmed the news on Tuesday, adding that Dybantsa did a little shooting at practice and is considered day-to-day afterward — suggesting the absence could be short. Dybantsa was one of the most hyped prospects in years, and fans will now have to wait a little longer for his NBA debut. The injury also delays one of the opening week's must-watch moments, as the league tips off with the champion Knicks, LeBron James' new-look 76ers and the Thunder-Spurs clash all on the schedule.
