No Fuel Shortage in Pakistan, Dealers Tell Public: Don't Panic-Buy as Levy Talks Continue

No Fuel Shortage in Pakistan, Dealers Tell Public

Pakistan's fuel dealers have urged the public not to rush to petrol stations, saying the country's fuel supplies are under control and that panic buying itself could create local shortages. The Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association said refineries are running normally and imports of crude oil and refined fuel from Gulf suppliers, including Oman and Saudi Arabia, are continuing.

The appeal came as talks between the government and Jamaat-i-Islami over cutting the fuel levy ended without agreement. A new technical committee — State Minister for Finance Bilal Azhar Kayani, JI Islamabad chief Nasrullah Randhawa and Deputy Secretary Syed Farasat Shah — will review the unresolved issues within two to three days. JI deputy chief Liaqat Baloch said his party will keep talking but will also keep protesting until relief is announced, and has asked for a meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and JI chief Hafiz Naeem this week.

Dealers also pointed to the wider supply picture: closures along the Iranian border have strained liquefied petroleum gas supplies, while November demand is expected at about 750,000 tonnes of diesel — roughly 70 percent met from local production — and 630,000 tonnes of petrol, of which local refineries cover about 30 percent. High prices and off-peak travel are expected to keep demand subdued.
