North Korea Fires Around 10 Ballistic Missiles Toward East Sea as Border Tensions Rise

North Korea fired around 10 short-range ballistic missiles toward the sea off its east coast on Thursday, South Korea's military said, in the latest show of force along one of the world's most heavily armed borders. The missiles were launched at about 12:30 p.m. local time from the Wonsan area and flew roughly 250 kilometres before landing in the sea, according to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff.
South Korea said it was strengthening surveillance and staying ready for further launches, while sharing information closely with the United States and Japan. Japan's defence ministry said the projectiles did not appear to have landed inside its exclusive economic zone, and South Korea's presidential National Security Office held an emergency meeting to assess the security implications, calling the launches a serious violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions.
The launch came as tensions on the Korean peninsula run high. Two mine explosions in the Demilitarized Zone on September 21 wounded three South Korean soldiers, an incident Seoul blames on the North and Pyongyang denies. Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of leader Kim Jong Un, has also warned that propaganda loudspeakers could be switched on along the border by the end of October, and North Korean artillery and armoured vehicles have been spotted near the frontier this week. It was the North's third missile launch this month and more than its tenth weapons test of the year.
