OpenAI Launches GPT-6.1 Terra With Lower API Prices for Work and Coding

OpenAI has launched GPT-6.1 Terra, a new AI model built for work involving images and computer applications, at lower standard API prices than its sibling model GPT-6.1 Sol. Released on October 26, 2026, Terra is available in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users, and developers can access it through the API under the identifier gpt-6.1-terra. The launch gives businesses and coders a cheaper route into OpenAI's newest generation of models.
The pricing is the headline: standard charges are US$1 per million input tokens, US$0.05 per million cached input tokens and US$5 per million output tokens, according to OpenAI's model documentation. Those rates apply to prompts of up to 272,000 input tokens; longer prompts attract double input and cache rates and 1.5 times the output rate for the full request, with cache writes and some tools carrying separate charges. The model documentation lists no support for the free API tier, so the cheaper rates are aimed squarely at paying developers and workplaces.
OpenAI says Terra brings improvements in computer-use and coding benchmarks — its own evaluations rather than independent tests. The pitch is practical: a model that can see screens, use applications and write code, at a price that makes it easier for teams to build AI into everyday workflows. For developers weighing which model to run, Terra's lower cost could make it the default choice for routine work, with the more expensive Sol reserved for the hardest jobs.
