OpenAI Plans to Buy Google AI Chips in Major Shift Away From Nvidia

OpenAI plans to buy Google's artificial intelligence chips, The Information reported on Tuesday, in a move that would deepen ties between two of the biggest rivals in the AI race. The report, citing a person familiar with the matter, did not disclose financial terms, and OpenAI declined to comment while Google did not immediately respond.
The planned purchase would build on an existing relationship: Reuters reported in June 2025 that OpenAI had already begun renting Google's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), and last week OpenAI said it would make its frontier AI models available through Google Cloud. Google's TPUs have gained ground as a cheaper alternative to Nvidia's market-leading graphics processors, and Google began selling the chips directly to some customers this year.
The deal comes as the AI infrastructure boom reaches staggering scale, with Amazon, Microsoft and Google parent Alphabet planning to spend as much as $600 billion combined this year on data centres and chips. Alphabet reports its quarterly results later on Wednesday, with investors watching for signs that its heavy AI spending is paying off in cloud growth. OpenAI, meanwhile, unveiled its first custom chip built with Broadcom in June and plans to deploy it by the end of the year.
