OpenAI Races to Raise $30 Billion at $1.4 Trillion Valuation Before Anthropic IPO

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman

OpenAI is accelerating plans to raise about $30 billion in new funding that could value the ChatGPT maker at more than $1.4 trillion, as it races to lock in commitments before rival Anthropic's expected stock market debut in mid-November, Reuters reported this week. The unusually compressed timetable reflects intensifying competition between the two AI developers for the same deep-pocketed investors.

SoftBank Group, Abu Dhabi's MGX and other existing OpenAI backers are in discussions to take part, according to people familiar with the matter. OpenAI is pitching investors on accelerating revenue growth following the launch of its latest models — claiming annualized revenue has surged to $50 billion, with a projection of $70 billion by year-end — while keeping its own IPO plans pushed to 2027.

Securing a valuation now matters because Anthropic's listing would give investors a public price to compare against. A figure above $1.4 trillion would mark a more than 60% increase from OpenAI's $852 billion valuation in March, even as investors grow more cautious about tech valuations, rising interest rates and the enormous cost of AI data centers.
