OpenAI Will Build Its Own Humanoid Robot — Altman Promises a “Cool Demo” in 2027

ChatGPT maker OpenAI is entering the humanoid robot race for real. CEO Sam Altman confirmed on the Sources podcast this week that the company will build its own robot hardware, answering with a flat “We will” when asked directly. In a separate interview with Fortune, he said the world can expect “a cool demo in 2027” — but warned robots won’t be “walking the streets” for a few years after that.

Altman argued the human shape makes sense because the world is designed for people — doors, keyboards and tools all fit the human body. But he insisted the real challenge is the “brain that makes the robot work,” not its appearance. OpenAI’s careers page backs him up: the company is hiring for 27 robotics roles covering custom motors, actuators, sensors and the manufacturing supply chains needed to build machines at scale.

The move puts OpenAI in direct competition with Tesla’s Optimus and other humanoid rivals, ending its hands-off approach of backing startups like Figure AI and 1X. Analysts project the humanoid market could be worth trillions of dollars by mid-century — and Altman wants OpenAI to own both the brain and the body.
