OpenAI's Price War Steals Replit and Rippling From Anthropic as AI Coding Gets Cheaper

OpenAI

OpenAI is winning the AI coding war with discounts, not just better models. According to a report by The Information, the ChatGPT maker has lured major customers away from rival Anthropic with steep price cuts — and the numbers are striking. At HR software firm Rippling, OpenAI's share of engineers' coding work jumped from 16% in May to 52%, while Anthropic's collapsed from 57% to 18%.

Coding platform Replit moved most of its AI spending to OpenAI after being offered more than 30% off a deal worth over USD 100 million a year, after Anthropic ended a discount it had been giving. Online-learning firm DataCamp was reportedly offered 40% off on condition it use OpenAI's Codex coding agent. Replit boss Amjad Masad, who announced the switch at TechCrunch Disrupt, said the decision came down to cost, partnership and performance.

The timing is brutal for Anthropic, which is reportedly set to file its IPO paperwork publicly as soon as 26 October. With top models now close enough in quality that price decides, and cheaper Chinese rivals like Moonshot's Kimi K3.1 Pro charging just USD 2 per million input tokens, the message for businesses is clear: it is a buyer's market, and it pays to haggle.
