Pakistan E-Passport Rollout Begins Today: What Applicants Need to Know

Pakistan's nationwide e-passport rollout begins today, October 23, 2026, with the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports shifting new applications to the electronic format. The start date was revised from October 15, according to notices issued by Pakistani diplomatic missions abroad, including the Consulate General in New York.

The key message for current passport holders is reassuring: existing machine-readable passports remain valid until their expiry dates, so nobody needs to replace a valid passport just because e-passports are arriving. Pakistani missions overseas are announcing their own transition schedules — the embassy in Doha, for example, starts issuing e-passports on October 25.

The chip-enabled document is expected to speed up immigration checks and reduce fraud. Applicants should confirm the latest requirements, processing arrangements and fees with the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports or their nearest diplomatic mission before applying.
