Pakistan Fuel Prices Surge 26% in Four Months as Food Costs Squeeze Millions

Millions of households in Pakistan are feeling the pinch of a severe cost-of-living squeeze, as petrol prices have surged 26.11% in just the first four months of the financial year 2026-27. Petrol rose from PKR 299.50 per litre on 1 July to PKR 377.71 per litre by 24 October, while high-speed diesel climbed 26.39%, from PKR 311.47 to PKR 393.66 per litre, according to reports citing The Express Tribune.
The knock-on effects have been swift. Transporters and freight operators have passed higher fuel costs into fares, while the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics' Sensitive Price Indicator recorded a 5.81% rise in the price index for 51 essential commodities between 2 July and 22 October. Salaried workers, daily-wage earners and pensioners are reportedly struggling to afford even two meals a day in Karachi, and flour prices have added to the pressure.
Adding further strain, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has risen by PKR 150 per kilogram in a single week, and tandoor operators have warned roti prices will climb further unless authorities act. Consumers complain that official price lists are missing from markets and profiteering goes unchecked. As of 25 October, no official relief measures had been announced, leaving the most vulnerable families braced for more pressure in the months ahead.
