Pakistan Gives 500,000 Chromebooks to Students: PM Shehbaz Launches Youth Scheme With Free Internet

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday launched a major education scheme that will give 500,000 Chromebooks and free internet devices to talented students across Pakistan over the next two years. Speaking at the launch ceremony in Islamabad, he said a child's talent and hard work should never be held back by poverty, and that selection for the devices will be purely on merit.
The package covers students in schools as well as registered religious seminaries, and each device comes with a portable MiFi internet unit and a bag. High-performing Grade 9 students and seminary students received the first devices at the ceremony. The scheme is backed by the Tokyo Technology Care Foundation, and officials say the internet access alone could benefit an estimated 2.5 million family members.
The prime minister pointed out that his party's earlier laptop scheme distributed around 600,000 laptops over a decade, while the new plan delivers almost as many devices in just two years. He also highlighted 27 Daanish schools being built across the country to offer free, high-quality education, saying the goal is to equip young Pakistanis with the skills to compete anywhere in the world.
