Pakistan Observes Kashmir Black Day on October 27 With Rallies Across the Country

Pakistan observes Kashmir Black Day on Tuesday, October 27, with rallies, seminars and other events planned in Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Islamabad, Muzaffarabad and Gilgit-Baltistan, as well as at Pakistani embassies abroad. The day marks the anniversary of October 27, 1947, when Indian troops landed in Srinagar, an event Pakistan and Kashmiris around the world protest as the start of what they describe as an occupation. Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs Amir Muqam, who chaired preparations at the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Council in Islamabad, said Pakistan would continue to stand with the Kashmiri people and press for their right to self-determination under United Nations resolutions.

Hurriyat Conference leaders are also taking part in the day's events, with speakers urging the international community to act on the Kashmir dispute. Organisers say the programmes are meant to draw attention to the hardships faced by Kashmiris and to renew calls for a peaceful settlement. The observance has been held every year on October 27, with black flags, protest walks and public gatherings forming the traditional pattern of the day across Pakistan and Azad Kashmir.
