Pakistan Ratifies Mecca Joint Defense Agreement With Türkiye and Saudi Arabia

Erdogan, Shehbaz Sharif and Mohammed bin Salman at the Mecca pact signing

Pakistan has completed the ratification of the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement with Türkiye and Saudi Arabia, Foreign Office spokesperson Sajjad Haider Khan announced at a news conference on Friday. Saudi Arabia has also finished its ratification process.

The agreement, signed on August 7 in Mecca by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, commits the three countries to collective defense and cooperation for regional security and stability. Khan described it as defensive in nature and consistent with the UN Charter, aimed at promoting regional peace through collective deterrence.

Operational details are still being worked out. “Matters related to the agreement, its ratification, and operationalization remain under discussion by the three parties including in the Strategic Political and Defense Committee,” Khan said, noting the committee last met on October 5. Each country follows its own constitutional and legal procedures for approving international agreements. Islamabad said it “remains fully committed to the letter and spirit of the agreement,” which reflects the three nations' shared vision of developing regional solutions to regional problems.
