Pakistan Suspends Trade With Iran at Two Key Border Crossings

Pakistan has temporarily suspended commercial trade with Iran at two major border crossings, Gabd-Rimdan in Gwadar and Taftan in Chagai, leaving hundreds of freight trucks stranded on both sides of the frontier.

The Ministry of Commerce issued a memorandum on Friday withdrawing an earlier order on trade with Iran, effectively halting cargo movement. Shahid Rind, adviser to the Balochistan chief minister, said the temporary closure was aimed at addressing security concerns, preventing smuggling and improving border management, dismissing social media rumours of a permanent shutdown.

Iran's foreign ministry spokesperson Esmail Baqaei also described the disruption as temporary but attributed it to "technical issues," saying both countries were holding consultations to restore normal operations.

The Quetta Chamber of Commerce and Industry has advised businesses to halt fresh import and export orders until further notice, warning of financial losses. Trucks carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), rice and fresh fruit are stuck at the crossings. With more than 4,000 tonnes of LPG imported daily through Gabd-Rimdan, traders fear the suspension could deepen shortages and push up prices in Karachi and elsewhere. Passenger traffic through the Rimdan-Gabd crossing remains operational.
