Pakistan Upgrades Karachi Labs to Boost Crop Safety and Farm Exports

Pakistan has upgraded two key Karachi laboratories to strengthen agricultural safety, improve pesticide testing and help exporters meet international standards. Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain inaugurated the upgraded facilities on October 23, according to the government's announcement.
The facilities are the Central Plant Quarantine Laboratory and the Federal Pesticides Testing and Reference Laboratory. Their enhanced testing capacity is meant to help authorities spot plant health risks, check pesticide formulations and make evidence-based decisions on agricultural safety and quality rules — the kind of checks importing countries demand before they open their markets.
The upgrade matters because agriculture remains the backbone of Pakistan's economy and a major source of jobs and exports, yet exporters have often struggled to prove their produce meets foreign safety requirements. Reliable lab results could make that easier, opening doors for farmers and food businesses. But an upgrade alone does not guarantee safer food or bigger exports: the benefits will depend on testing accuracy, trained staff, working equipment and consistent enforcement, and on whether importing countries trust the results the labs produce.
