Pakistan Urges End to Sudan War at UN: No Military Solution, Envoy Tells Security Council

Pakistan has told a top United Nations meeting that Sudan's devastating war has no military solution and urged all sides to lay down their weapons, as fighting between the army and a rival paramilitary force grinds into its fourth year. Acting Permanent Representative Usman Jadoon delivered the message at a joint meeting of the UN Security Council and the African Union Peace and Security Council in New York on Friday.

Jadoon said the meeting should send one clear message: preserve Sudan's unity and state institutions, end outside support fuelling the conflict, pursue an immediate end to the violence, and create space for an inclusive political process led by Africans. He said the priority must be easing the suffering of ordinary Sudanese people and keeping the country united, sovereign and stable.

Sudan has been at war since April 2023, when fighting broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces militia. What began as a power struggle has spread into Kordofan and Blue Nile, with drone strikes killing civilians and attacks disrupting aid work. Pakistan welcomed the African Union envoy's recent engagement in Khartoum and his talks with political, civilian, women and youth leaders.
