Pakistan Warms to Russia: Sharif-Putin Summit Expected in Moscow This Year

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Russian President Vladimir Putin are expected to meet in Moscow before the end of 2026 and again in Pakistan in 2027, in what would be the most significant high-level engagement between the two countries in years.
Officials familiar with the discussions say a first-ever visit by a Russian interior minister to Pakistan last week cleared the way for direct talks at the highest level. The timing reflects Islamabad's search for new partners: Pakistan needs energy imports it cannot easily get from Western suppliers and investment it cannot secure through traditional channels, while Moscow wants access to warm-water ports and trade routes through Central Asia.
The obstacles remain real. US sanctions on Russian oil still constrain the energy deals Islamabad craves, Russia's deep ties with India give Pakistan reason to hedge, and instability along the Afghan border adds risk neither side can ignore. Analysts in Islamabad caution that trade volumes remain modest and energy agreements are stalled — but the political signal is unmistakable: Pakistan is testing whether Moscow can be more than a transactional partner.
