Pakistan's Army Chief Asim Munir Heads to Tehran as Islamabad Pushes US-Iran Diplomacy

Pakistan

Pakistan's army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, is due to visit Tehran on Tuesday, Reuters reported, citing a Pakistani official and Iranian media — the latest sign of Islamabad's growing role as a potential bridge between Iran and the United States.

The trip comes during one of the region's most dangerous years. Reuters reported that Munir's earlier discussions with Iranian leaders over the summer included ways to prevent further escalation, restore traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and push toward an end to the conflict. The strait is a lifeline for global energy shipments, and its closure after February's attacks has sent fuel prices soaring worldwide and strained Pakistan's own economy.

Officials have not released a detailed itinerary, and it is unclear what agreements — if any — the visit might produce. But the trip underlines Pakistan's delicate balancing act: walking a line between Washington and Tehran at a time when a fragile June truce has collapsed and fears of full-scale war are rising again.
