Pakistan's Farmers Take to the Streets, Demand 'Agricultural Emergency' as Wheat Season Nears

Pakistan farmers protest demanding agricultural emergency

Small farmers across Pakistan held nationwide protests on Monday, demanding guaranteed support prices for their crops and an end to what they call corporate land grabbing. The demonstrations, organised by the Pakistan Kissan Rabta Committee, highlight a deepening rural crisis.

Farmers want the wheat support price fixed at PKR 5,000 per maund, arguing that soaring costs of fertiliser, diesel, electricity and seeds have made farming unviable. The Pakistan Kissan Ittehad has gone further, calling on the government to declare an agricultural emergency, warning that mounting losses could threaten the country's food security.

The protests come as the Rabi wheat sowing season begins, with production costs already near PKR 3,761 per maund and water shortages affecting irrigation. Analysts warn that if farm profitability keeps falling, Pakistan may be forced to spend scarce foreign exchange on costly food imports. The government has yet to announce any emergency measures.
