Pakistan's Food Exports Jump 25% as Rice Shipments to the Philippines Surge

Rice sacks loaded for export at a port

Pakistan's food exports climbed 25 percent in the first quarter of the fiscal year, driven by a sharp rise in rice shipments to the Philippines, a market traditionally supplied by Vietnam and other major Asian exporters.

Rice exporters credited the government's Drawback of Local Taxes and Levies (DLTL) incentive scheme, which helped Pakistani exporters offset domestic costs and stay competitive in international markets. In non-basmati rice, the Philippines emerged as the biggest market in the Far East, with Pakistani exporters securing substantial new orders during the quarter.

Higher Vietnamese rice prices and political disagreements between Vietnam and the Philippines pushed Filipino buyers toward alternative suppliers. Pakistani exporters also benefited from competition with India, whose older rice crop some buyers found less attractive. Meat shipments rose 21 percent to $148 million, seafood exports grew 15 percent to $103 million, and oilseeds, nuts and kernels jumped 241 percent to $125 million.
