Petroleum Levy Showdown: Govt and JI Form Joint Panel as Mid-November March Looms

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met Jamaat-e-Islami emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman at the Prime Minister's House in Islamabad on Tuesday, October 27, and both sides agreed to set up a joint committee to finalise recommendations on petroleum relief measures and the petroleum levy. The six-member committee, with three members from each side, will work on expanding the ongoing petrol relief scheme so more deserving people can benefit, and on workable proposals for a phased reduction in the levy. The prime minister nominated Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal and Adviser Rana Sanaullah as the government's representatives.
The core disagreement remains: Jamaat-e-Islami insists the levy must be abolished outright and rejected proposals to cut it by Rs20, Rs25 or Rs30 per litre as insufficient, while the government favours a gradual withdrawal tied to fiscal limits. The party has not called off its protest campaign and says it will still march to Islamabad in mid-November if meaningful relief is not announced, even as it gave the government another seven to 10 days for talks.
The relief scheme already in place offers Rs100 a litre off petrol for motorcycles, three-wheeler rickshaws and cars of up to 800cc, with 12.7 million people registered and the number expected to reach 20 million. Fresh prices on Thursday, October 29, put petrol at Rs377.91 per litre and high-speed diesel at Rs399.82, with the government levying Rs114 per litre on petrol and Rs100 on diesel.
