Pistons Stun Celtics 121-113 in Record 22-Point Opening-Night Comeback

The Detroit Pistons opened their NBA season with a historic comeback, erasing a 22-point third-quarter deficit to beat the Boston Celtics 121-113 at Little Caesars Arena on Tuesday night.

Boston looked in complete control behind Paul George, who dropped 38 points in his Celtics debut — a franchise record — including five steals, making him the first player since 1973-74 to record 35-plus points and five steals in a debut with a new team. But Detroit exploded in the second half, outscoring the Celtics 76-55, including a devastating 23-0 run in the fourth quarter that buried the visitors.

Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren scored 22 points each for Detroit, while Duncan Robinson caught fire with 21 points on 5-of-9 shooting from deep and Javonte Green added 19 off the bench. Jayson Tatum endured a rough night with 13 points on 6-of-23 shooting. It is the largest opening-day comeback of the play-by-play era and Detroit's first 20-plus-point opening-night comeback since 1997. Boston, now 0-1, hosts the champion Knicks on Friday.
