PM's Youth Chromebook Scheme: 500,000 Laptops for Pakistan's Top Grade 9 Students

PM

Pakistan's federal government has unveiled a scheme to put 500,000 refurbished Chromebooks into the hands of high-performing Grade 9 students over the next three years, in one of the country's largest digital-education pushes. The Prime Minister's Youth Chromebook Scheme, run by the Ministry of Federal Education with the Prime Minister's Youth Programme, aims to close the gap for students whose families cannot afford a laptop.

Selection will be strictly merit-based: students are ranked on their latest SSC-I exam scores, verified by the Inter Boards Coordination Commission, and must score at least 50%. Punjab gets the largest share with 181,090 devices, followed by Sindh (85,925), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (51,170) and Balochistan (31,815). Islamabad receives 100,000, while Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan get 25,000 each. Four in five devices go to school students, 70% science and 30% arts, and one in five to registered madaris students.

Each laptop will be linked to its recipient by serial number and delivered by courier, with a central system tracking every dispatch and delivery. Grievance committees at board and provincial level will handle complaints about merit lists or missing devices. For a teenager who has never owned a computer, officials say, the device could open a wider world of learning.
