Pope Leo Needs No Further Cancer Treatment, Doctors Say

Pope Leo will not need any further therapy after his lung cancer surgery, his doctors announced on Wednesday — a reassuring verdict for the 71-year-old pontiff that means the tumor had not spread. "A subsequent oncological evaluation has confirmed that no further therapy is required," said lead surgeon Stefano Margaritora and the pope's personal physician Luigi Carbone in a Vatican statement.
Final histological examinations and molecular biology tests on the tissue removed confirmed the diagnosis of a localized lung adenocarcinoma, the most common form of lung cancer. The pope himself had announced after the October 11 Angelus prayer that doctors found a "small, localized nodule" in his lung; two days later he entered Rome's Gemelli Hospital, where a 90-minute video-assisted operation removed the lower lobe of his right lung.
Leo was discharged from hospital on Saturday and is gradually resuming normal duties. On Wednesday he returned to St Peter's Square for his first weekly general audience since the surgery, giving pilgrims a thumbs-up from the popemobile. It remains unclear whether the US-born pope will proceed with his planned November 6-17 trip to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru, with the Vatican saying his schedule may be adjusted to aid recovery.
