"Protocol, Not Power": Ex-IMF Director Punctures Pakistan's "Historic Milestone" IMF–World Bank Chair Claim

Pakistan's celebrations over landing a top seat in global finance were cut short this week when a former IMF executive director publicly dismantled the government's "historic milestone" claim. Pakistan was named chair of the Boards of Governors of the IMF and the World Bank Group for 2027, announced at the annual meetings in Bangkok on October 16. It will be the first time Pakistan holds the position since 1953, and Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema is set to take the chair.
Islamabad hailed the appointment as a return to the "top table of global finance after 74 years." But former IMF executive director Krishnamurthy V. Subramanian pushed back sharply on X: "Pakistan will chair the IMF-World Bank Annual Plenary in 2027. This chair is purely ceremonial & rotates annually: Paraguay this year, Cabo Verde in 2025. It's protocol, not power." He argued the role simply means presiding over the annual meeting — nothing like India's G20 presidency, which set the agenda for a major economic forum.
The sharp exchange has lit up debate on both sides of the border, with Indian TV channels running the story as a reality check on Pakistan's narrative. Whether Islamabad's spin wins hearts at home or the rebuttal shapes opinion abroad, one thing is clear: the 2027 chairmanship will keep making headlines long before the gavel comes down.
