Punjab Extends Detention of Imran Khan's Sisters by 30 More Days, LHC Told

Punjab Extends Detention of Imran Khan

The Punjab government has extended the detention of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan's three sisters for another 30 days, the Lahore High Court was told on Monday. Aleema Khan, Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi have been held at Lahore's Kot Lakhpat Jail for over a month under the Maintenance of Public Order law.

Aleema was detained on 20 September in Lahore, and her sisters were taken into custody a day later on police recommendation, ahead of PTI's planned nationwide protests and a long march on Islamabad on 27 September demanding Imran Khan's release. A government lawyer told the court the Lahore deputy commissioner had recommended the extension and the provincial government approved it on 7 October.

The disclosure came during a hearing on a petition filed by Aleema's son, Shahrez Khan, who challenged the detentions after the original 30-day orders expired on 19 and 20 October. The court took the Punjab home secretary's report on record and disposed of the petition, while the sisters' lawyer had asked for them to be recovered and produced before the court. PTI leaders condemned the extension, questioning why the sisters remain detained when, they say, they are not wanted in any criminal case.
